Firts hard disk with integrated heads, used in the IBM 360 and 370 computers, with a capacity of 250 Mb, coeval with punched card equipment.

PHILIPPINES WOODEN DOOR

Wooden piece from the Phillipines, carved in the shape of a centreboard. It acted as a door for an irrigation channel or a dock.

Its importance lies in the treatment applied on one of its sides, probably the one in contact with salt water, which tried to ensure the pieces’ waterproofing and prevent its decomposition following the caulking and careening techniques that are typical of wooden naval construction.

18TH CENTURY ORLOP

Partial staging of an 18th century orlop containing two cannons, a hammock and various everyday objects present in ships from that period.

Plywood ‘Snipe’ boat, with white hull and varnished deck, complete with wooden mast and boom, rudder, tiller, centreboard and a set of sails. It was named Lóstrego.

Made in Astilleros Lagos de Bouzas (Vigo)

CONSTRUCTION BOAT MAPI

Construction boat named MAPI with mast and lateen, characteristic of the Ares and Ferrol estuaries. It was built by Manuel Picallo around 1970 in the town of Redes.

MODEL OF THE GUARNIZO SHIPYARD

Model of the Royal Dockyard of Guarnizo (Cantabria), one of the most important shipyards in Spain between the 17th and 18th centuries. Scale 1:200.

Very important vessels were built here. In this model we can see the construction of the Real Felipe, launched in 1730. With its 114 cannons, this was the most powerful ship of its time and the flagship of the Spanish Royal Navy.

PRÍNCIPE DE ASTURIAS

Model of the bow, showing the anchoring system of the aircraft carrier Príncipe de Asturias.

Full-sized replica of a ship section, including the main structural elements of an 18th century ship frame. Access ramps allow the visitors to walk through it.

CRUISER CANARIAS MODEL

The model represents the cruiser as it was during the Semana Naval de Barcelona (Barcelona’s Naval Week), held in june 1966. The Canarias was one of two heavy cruisers based on the County class. Scale 1:60.

FRIGATE STA. MARÍA MAGDALENA

Recovered parts of the Santa María Magdalena wreckage. Built in 1773 in the Esteiro slipways, it sank due to a storm the night from 2 to 3 november 1810 in the Viveiro estuary. Around 800 men died, making it the greatest shipwreck in Galician history.

In 2018 the pieces had to undergo a restoration process due to an infestation of the xylophaga Teredo Navalis, suffered during its years of service.

Fragments of the bow (stem) and the stern (sternpost, sternpost curve and two shell plating pieces).

11-metre-long wooden trainera, with eight thwarts and seven oars on each side for sailing competition.

STEAMBOAT COMERCIO

The Comercio, a steamboat bought by the company La Herculina Ferrolana in 1901 in Glasgow (UK), carried passengers and goods between Ferrol and A Coruña.

MODEL OF FERROL

Diorama at a scale of 1:10,000 representing Ferrol’s square, the estuary, the Arsenal and their defences in the 18th century (more specifically in 1795).

Scale reproduction of a Yarrow boiler. This is an acuotubular boiler: water circulates inside the tubes while combustion gases circulate outside them. This type of boiler was very common in warships until the mid-1900s.

Educational automaton that spreads the frames along the length of the ship.

Reproduction of the instrument used for defining top levels of a piece based on its model at a 1:10 scale. This information is later used for the production of the full-sized casting pattern.

TOY BATTLESHIP ESPAÑA

Toy reproduction of the battleship España (1930). Manufactured in Alicante by the company Hermanos Payá. The movement of its front wheel simulates the ocean waves.

Hand tool, similar to a hammer but larger and heavier, used to counter the blows of the riveter from outside the hull.

This piece comes from the old masting sheer of the Arsenal of Ferrol.

ARTEAGA LAUNCH MODEL

Model representing the launch of the oil tanker Arteaga in 1972, from slipway no. 1 of the Astano Shipyard. It was the largest vessel ever built on a slipway up until then, with a weight of 325.000 DWT (deadweight tons). It was in service from 1973 to 1984. Scale 1:2000.

PUERTO REAL SHIPYARD

Model of the Puerto Real Shipyard in Cádiz. The shipyard was inaugurated by the Marquess of Comillas in 1878, and it had different owners throughout its history, from the Sociedad Española de Construcción Naval to Navantia, its current owner. Covering more than one million square metres, Puerto Real is the largest shipyard in the country. Scale 1:1000.

ASTANO SHIPYARD

Model of the Astano Shipyard from the bridge of As Pías. It started as a private company founded by José María González Llanos. Towards the end of the 1960s Astano specialised in the construction of oil tankers like the Arteaga. This shipyard currently belongs to Navantia and it has two 337-metre-long slipways, two dry docks and a gantry crane that can lift up to 800 tons. Scale 1:1000.

DISCOVERER ENTERPRISE MODEL

Discoverer Enterprise model, one of the largest offshore units built in Fene’s shipyards in 1998. During a storm in January 1998, it broke free from its mooring and crashed nto the As Pías bridge, partially destroying it and leaving the city of Ferrol practically isolated for a while.

REPLICA OF THE BORNA

Replica of the Borna; this piece evokes prehistoric naval construction using leather, which was used for sailing between Ireland and Galicia.

It takes inspiration from the Borna Petroglyphs and the Borna craft built in 1974.

EXPONAV

The Museum of Naval Construction of Ferrol, run by the EXPONAV Foundation, is the only one of its kind, making it the most important shipbuilding museum in Spain. All sorts of pieces related to this activity can be found among its collection, such as shipbuilding tools, propulsion systems, scale models and even the
remains of a sunken frigate from 1810.

All of it in a unique building as relevant as the collection itself, an 18th century blacksmith’s for the production of anchors and chains, among others, employing more than 140 workers at the time.

GROUND FLOOR

The Museum begins on the ground floor of the Herrerías building. The first stage of the tour is subdivided into five thematic modules.

FIRST FLOOR

The Temporary Exhibition Hall houses pictorial, photographic, and artistic exhibits on themes related to the sea.
